The show provides a mansion with very luxury items, portraying the girls as “high class”. The girls dress in somewhat expensive things and a bit skanky. All the girls talk with an attitude, like they run the show. I think the show is filmed and edited to show only the drama that goes on in the house and jaw dropping moments. The show is filmed on location. Bad Girls Club is similar to a lot of other reality television shows. It’s full of drama to keep things exciting. The girls are definitely stereotypical, and are a lot like other female cast crews of other shows. There is a lot of alcohol drinking, fighting, and having sex incorporated in this show, similar for example, Jersey Shore. A few things that set Bad Girls Club aside from other reality shows is the cast is all female, no males are allowed to live in the house. Secondly, there’s rules, if there is any type of physical violence that girl is forced to leave the house. The girls on this show aren’t allowed to watch television, or have cell phones while filming. Lastly, the girls are there to accomplish personal goals, and grow from the situation, hoping to leave with new characteristics.
In a sense, Bad Girls Club, defies a few stereotypes of woman. The cast of females that come on the show are mainly independent, strong-willed, opinionated woman, though this does open the door to other stereotypes about young females these days. Such as partying, drinking, having sex, and showing dominance through fighting. This show stereotypes itself before we even have a chance too! The minute the girls walk through the door and introduce themselves, the producers give each girl nicknames, such as “The Mouth,” “The Botox Barbie,” etc. They are proud to hold the labels, “bitch”, “slut”, etc. Surprisingly this season there isn’t a ditzy blonde (though there is a tough one). Judi is portrayed as the skanky loud mouth. Nastasia is the “big, black girl with an attitude”, while Shelly is portrayed as the tough but pretty lesbian.
The commercials advertised in between the show are definitely pointed at a female audience. Most of them are makeup, tampon, lotion, etc. ads. Some commercials portray a higher income watching the show because they advertised luxuries cars and travel agencies. As far as age is concerned, it jumped from average teenage commercials, to soccer mom ads. The commercials completely make sense for the audience that is drawn not only to this show, but to the channel (Oxygen).
If I was a visitor to United States from another country, this show wouldn’t resemble very many good things about the females in our country. I would conclude that our culture doesn’t have a lot of class, let alone values. I would interpret that young woman in this country are crazy, stuck up, partying skanks.
Bad Girls Club ultimate strength is its entertaining. Whether you really like the show or not, something is always happening which draws you in. It is fascinating to see how people act in unusual situations. Another strength is each season it’s a new group of girls, none celebrities. This is refreshing because it’s new faces, new personalities and new drama. A weakness it has it that it doesn’t portray “real life” at all. The girls on this show get to live in a mansion, and don’t have to do anything but party for three months. In actual reality, people have to work to earn money (especially to go out that often), and most don’t live in a luxury mansion. Another weakness is this show doesn’t really appeal to a large group of people. One group includes males. It’s a house full of females, arguing and causing drama all the time (a man’s worst nightmare). It also has a semi-limited age bracket. Kids and most young adults aren’t allowed (or shouldn’t be) to watch this show because of the vulgar language, sexuality, violence and lifestyle it portrays.
I liked and disliked a lot of things about this show. Firstly, I do love the fact they are bringing woman who are independent and out spoken on a show. Although, the world is evolving I feel woman still play the quiet, sensitive role and this show is completely contradicting to that stereotype. I also deep down like a little drama in my life. Watching Bad Girls Club lets me watch their drama, while avoiding my own. I love that the girls are from all over the place, and all have their own personalities and styles. Lastly, I do enjoy watching them live a life I haven’t ever been able to experience myself (limos, mansion, clubs, etc.) What I don’t like is how exposed these girls get. I don’t think the viewers need to see the girls getting down with every male they meet. It portrays the show to have all slutty girls when they aren’t ALL like that and builds a stereotype that all young woman who party and are independent are skanky also. I also don’t like that most these girls come from backgrounds of money, and show it off with their clothing and attitudes. The drama and personalities is what makes it memorable! I think what makes it so interesting to discuss with my friends is the fact that we have never been so outrageous in our lives. After each show, I’ll get a text from a friend saying, “Can you believe so and so did that!” In a sense, it’s hilarious to watch them embarrass themselves on television, and in another, some characteristics the cast brings on, you want of your own.
I have watched Bad Girls Club since season 3. I don’t miss an episode. If I’m not home to watch it, I definitely make sure it’s recorded. I use to watch it every night with my two female roommates. I’ve recruited my boyfriend since then and it has become one of our weekly shows. I wouldn’t ever watch it with my family though. I am a fan on Facebook, though I rarely visit the website. I like having Bad Girls Club on Facebook because it reminds me when a season is starting, and reminds me weekly on the day it will be on. It also keeps me updated with past bad girls.
When I was analyzing the show, it really took me a long time to figure out what I did like and didn’t like about it. It’s always just been something I watched. I’ve learned more who the show and channel it’s on targets (woman) and who it doesn’t really try and attract at all. I was surprised after really examining the show how inappropriate it is. I would never allow my children to watch it, but I don’t think I would allow them to watch any reality television because of the mix up of what is real and not. One thing I will definitely take with me, is how influenced I really was by this show whether I saw it or not at the time. This show and the females on them have an effect on me. After I watch it, I feel empowered, and independent. I have fantasized about what it would be like to be on the Bad Girls Club or to live one of their lives. I’ve beyond any doubt, realized I have to remind MYSELF as an adult, that it’s portrayed a certain way and isn’t really “reality”.
"A Bad Girl knows what she wants and how to get it. She makes her own way, makes her own rules and she makes no apologies. A Bad Girl blazes her own trail and removes obstacles from her path. A Bad Girl fights and forces her way to the top with style and beauty. A Bad Girl believes in jumping first and looking later. People will love you. People will hate you. Others will secretly wish to be you. A Bad Girl is you."
